UNESCO proclaims new World Heritage Site in WC and KZN

On Friday, 26 July 2024, the 46th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee proclaimed World Heritage status for three sites in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, as part of the South African nomination, ‘The Emergence of Modern Human Behaviour: The Pleistocene Occupation Sites of South Africa.’

Sibhudu Cave, KwaZulu-Natal

Sibhudu Cave is an archaeological site located in the KwaDukuza Municipality, about 40 km north of Durban and about 10 km inland from the Indian Ocean. It is a shelter positioned in a steep, forested cliff that overlooks the uThongathi River.

A journey through the Cradle of Human Culture

A journey through the Cradle of Human Culture traces the origins and development of human culture over the past 160 000 years and in the process, it also uncovers what it means to be human. From engraved ostrich eggshells and bone tools to shell beads and the first evidence of drawing, visitors will discover some of humanity’s earliest use of symbols, art and technological innovation.
